Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology in education has accelerated the adoption of blended learning models, which combine face-to-face instruction with online learning environments. However, the development of effective blended learning models requires a robust theoretical foundation to ensure that the integration of technology genuinely enhances the quality of the learning process rather than merely serving as a technical add-on. Constructivism Theory, rooted in the seminal works of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky, offers a powerful epistemological and pedagogical framework for designing learning experiences that actively engage learners in constructing knowledge. This article aims to examine the conceptual role of Constructivism Theory in the development of blended learning models and to propose an implementation framework that bridges theoretical principles with practical instructional design. Through a systematic conceptual literature review, this paper explores the core tenets of constructivism—including active knowledge construction, social interaction, contextual learning, and scaffolding—and analyzes how each tenet can be operationalized within the blended learning architecture. The findings indicate that Constructivism Theory provides a coherent rationale for the pedagogical decisions inherent in blended learning design, including the allocation of synchronous and asynchronous activities, the role of the instructor as a facilitator, and the design of collaborative digital tasks. The proposed implementation framework integrates four constructivist dimensions: cognitive engagement, social collaboration, authentic context, and adaptive scaffolding, which together constitute a comprehensive guide for educators and instructional designers. This paper concludes that the alignment between constructivist principles and blended learning design is not only theoretically sound but also practically necessary for achieving meaningful and transferable learning outcomes in contemporary educational settings.
