Author Guidelines

JIRAN: Journal of Southeast Asia Studies welcomes original and high-quality submissions that contribute to scholarly research on Southeast Asia. All manuscripts must adhere to the following guidelines prior to submission.


1. Types of Submissions

JIRAN accepts the following types of contributions:

  • Research Articles (6,000–9,000 words)

  • Review Articles (4,000–7,000 words)

  • Book Reviews (1,000–2,000 words)

  • Case Studies or Field Reports (up to 5,000 words)

All word counts include references, tables, and figures.


2. Language

Manuscripts must be written in clear and concise English. Authors whose first language is not English are encouraged to have their work professionally edited before submission.


3. Formatting and Style

  • Use Times New Roman, 12 pt, 1.5 line spacing, A4 size, normal margins.

  • Submit in Microsoft Word (.docx) format.

  • Use APA 7th Edition for citations and references.

  • Include page numbers on all pages.

  • Avoid footnotes when possible; use endnotes sparingly.


4. Structure of the Manuscript

Each manuscript should include the following components:

a. Title Page

  • Title of the article (concise and informative)

  • Full name(s) of author(s)

  • Affiliation(s) and email address(es)

  • ORCID iD (if available)

  • Corresponding author clearly indicated

b. Abstract

  • 150–250 words

  • Must summarize the purpose, methodology, findings, and significance

  • Include 4–6 keywords

c. Main Text

Structure may vary based on discipline but typically includes:

  • Introduction

  • Literature Review

  • Methodology

  • Findings/Results

  • Discussion

  • Conclusion

d. References

  • Use APA 7th Edition referencing style

  • Only include works cited in the text

e. Figures and Tables

  • Number all tables and figures sequentially (e.g., Table 1, Figure 1)

  • Provide captions and ensure they are cited in the text

  • Submit tables and figures in editable format (not images)


5. Submission Process

Submissions should be made via [insert submission portal or email address]. All manuscripts will undergo an initial editorial screening, followed by a double-blind peer review process.


6. Ethical Considerations

  • Manuscripts must be original and not under review elsewhere.

  • All authors must agree to the submission and confirm that there are no conflicts of interest.

  • If the research involves human subjects, ethical approval and informed consent must be clearly stated.


7. Plagiarism Policy

All manuscripts are checked using plagiarism detection software. Manuscripts with a similarity score exceeding 20% (excluding references) may be rejected or returned for revision.


8. Copyright and Licensing

Authors retain copyright and grant JIRAN the right of first publication under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0). This permits others to share and adapt the work, with appropriate attribution.


9. Article Processing Charges (APC)

There are no submission or publication fees for articles published in JIRAN.
