Screening for Plagiarism Policy

JIRAN: Journal of Southeast Asia Studies is committed to upholding academic integrity and ensuring that all published content is original and free from plagiarism.

1. Plagiarism Check

All submitted manuscripts are subject to a plagiarism screening using reliable plagiarism detection software (such as Turnitin, iThenticate, or equivalent) before entering the peer review process.

2. Acceptable Similarity Threshold

  • Manuscripts with a similarity index of more than 20% (excluding references, quotes, and properly cited materials) may be returned to the author for revision or rejected outright, depending on the severity and nature of the overlap.

  • Self-plagiarism or duplicate publication will also be scrutinized and may result in rejection.

3. What Constitutes Plagiarism

Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:

  • Copying text, data, images, or ideas from other sources without proper citation

  • Paraphrasing substantial portions of another work without acknowledgment

  • Presenting someone else’s research findings or arguments as one’s own

  • Reusing one's own previously published material without disclosure (self-plagiarism)

4. Editorial Action

If plagiarism is detected before publication, the manuscript will be returned to the author for explanation, correction, or immediate rejection.

If plagiarism is detected after publication, the editorial board will investigate the matter and may issue:

  • A formal correction

  • A retraction of the article

  • Notification to the author's institution or funding agency

5. Author Responsibility

Authors are responsible for ensuring that their work is entirely original and that all sources are appropriately acknowledged. By submitting a manuscript, authors agree to the journal’s plagiarism policy.

This policy is in line with the ethical publishing standards set by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
