Focus and Scope

JIRAN: Journal of Southeast Asia Studies is a peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to the advancement of scholarly research on Southeast Asia. The journal provides a platform for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to the study of Southeast Asia, encompassing the region’s diverse cultures, societies, politics, histories, economies, and environments.

We welcome original research articles, conceptual papers, critical reviews, and case studies that contribute to a deeper understanding of Southeast Asia from a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to:

  • Anthropology and Sociology

  • History and Archaeology

  • Political Science and International Relations

  • Economics and Development Studies

  • Language, Literature, and Cultural Studies

  • Religious and Philosophical Studies

  • Environmental and Sustainability Studies

Articles may focus on individual countries within Southeast Asia or adopt a comparative, regional, or transnational perspective. The journal encourages submissions that engage with current debates, employ innovative methodologies, or offer fresh insights into the Southeast Asian experience.

JIRAN publishes Twice a year ( January and July ) and is committed to open-access publishing under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0).
