Publication Ethics

JIRAN: Journal of Southeast Asia Studies is committed to upholding the highest standards of publication ethics and ensuring the integrity of the scholarly record. The journal adheres to the guidelines established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and expects all parties involved in the publication process—editors, authors, reviewers, and publishers—to act with ethical responsibility and professionalism.

1. Duties of Authors

  • Originality and Plagiarism: Authors must ensure that their submissions are original and free from plagiarism. All sources and references must be properly cited.

  • Multiple Submissions: Authors should not submit the same manuscript to more than one journal concurrently.

  • Acknowledgement of Sources: Proper acknowledgment of the work of others must be given. Any form of data, text, or idea borrowed from other sources must be appropriately credited.

  • Authorship: Only those who have made a significant contribution to the research and writing of the manuscript should be listed as authors. All authors must approve the final version of the paper.

  • Conflicts of Interest: Authors must disclose any potential conflicts of interest that could influence the research or interpretation of their findings.

2. Duties of Editors

  • Fair and Impartial Review: Editors must evaluate submissions solely on the basis of academic merit, without regard to race, gender, nationality, institutional affiliation, or political views of the authors.

  • Confidentiality: Editors must ensure the confidentiality of all submitted manuscripts and the identities of authors and reviewers.

  • Conflict of Interest: Editors must refrain from handling manuscripts in which they have a conflict of interest.

  • Corrections and Retractions: Editors are responsible for issuing corrections or retractions when significant errors or ethical breaches are discovered in published articles.

3. Duties of Reviewers

  • Confidentiality: Reviewers must treat manuscripts as confidential documents and must not share or discuss them with others.

  • Objectivity: Reviews should be conducted objectively, with clear and constructive feedback provided to improve the quality of the manuscript.

  • Acknowledgement of Sources: Reviewers should identify any relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors.

  • Timeliness: Reviewers must complete their evaluations in a timely manner and notify the editor if they are unable to meet the deadline.

4. Ethical Oversight

JIRAN has mechanisms in place to handle allegations of misconduct, including plagiarism, falsification of data, and unethical research practices. If misconduct is confirmed, appropriate actions will be taken, including rejection or retraction of the manuscript.

5. Research Involving Humans or Animals

If the research involves human participants or animals, authors must provide evidence of ethical approval by an appropriate institutional review board and confirm that informed consent was obtained.

This ethical statement reflects the values and responsibilities of JIRAN as an open-access scholarly journal committed to academic integrity and ethical publishing.
